Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complicated disorder to which there is no known cure. With symptoms progressively worsening over time, treatment options are essential to combating this complex disease. Promising results have been encouraging with addition of CBD oil to conventional treatments, so much so that the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) holds a patent on the use of Cannabinoids (the active chemical compound found CBD) as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant.

SYMPTOMS

The National MS Society Study estimates there to be nearly 1 million people suffering from MS in the United States alone. MS attacks the nerve fibers and disrupts the neurological pathways of the body. This disorder is labeled as an “immune-mediated” condition or in simpler terms an autoimmune disease.

Symptoms often differ from patient to patient but generally diminish the capability to properly perform normal movements, visual disturbances and a variety of other debilitating symptoms. Symptoms may include:

Movement Symptoms

  • Tremor & lack of coordination
  • Electric shock sensations with the movement of the neck
  • Numbness or weakness of the bodily limbs with varying degrees from side to side

Visual Symptoms

  • Vision loss
  • Double Vision
  • Blurred Vision

Other Symptoms

  • Fatigue & Dizziness
  • Slurred Speech
  • Tingling and pain sensations
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Bowel Irregularity
  • Bladder Problems
  • Changes in bodily temperatures and exacerbate symptoms

THE PROGRESSION OF MS AND ITS SYMPTOMS

MS is characterized by progressively worsening symptoms with periods of relapse. Many relapses can last for months or even years.

HOPE FOR MS PATIENTS

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to manipulate the disrupted neurological pathways that cause the symptoms of MS. Although there is no cure for MS. CBD gives great hope to those who are plagued by its symptoms.

RESEARCH SURROUNDING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) WITH CBD AND OTHER CANNABINOIDS

The pivotal research was done in 2007 and in the following years surrounding multiple sclerosis and medical marijuana. I would like to share with you a few that really stuck out.

EUR J NEUROL. 2011

One particular randomized, double-blind study of 241 patients stands out for me. Out of 75% of patients receiving medical cannabis there was relevant improvements in their multiple sclerosis, with only 10% experiencing episodes of sedation and dizziness. 46% of patients also reported improvements in sleep, with 51% reporting reductions in spasm frequency.

EUR J NEUROL. 2016

After marijuana was introduced in Italy, a web-based registry began collecting data on all patients prescribed the medication. 1,534 MS patients had data gathered on them from January 2014 to February 2015. And out of this group, 62% had a robust initial response to adding medical cannabis to their treatments. 41% continued with an ongoing positive response at six months with no evidence of abuse or misuse. This data has been repeated in prospective observational studies in Germany and in Italy in 2014 and 2015.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CBD FOR MS

The market has some great cannabinoid-based drugs currently available and more on the way. The challenge is to find a drug that is effective for you, the right dosage with an appropriate administration method. There are no set parameters for CBD so it may take some trial and error to find the most effective dosage.

Find a quality compound with a high CBD content. I have seen one dosage containing as much as 250 mg CBD, so do your research, read reviews and use trial and error to find the most suitable CBD product for your body.

It’s important to note that cannabinoids may chemically react with other prescribed drugs, increasing or reducing their effects. So keep a record of any signs or symptoms of a chemical interaction and discontinue usage if symptoms persist.

CONCLUSION

The government’s patent on CBD for the treatment of MS shows what incredible implications this product has been shown to have. But, it does make me wonder why the government hasn’t pursued any clinical trials in the case of CBD. But I digress, many studies have proven the positive effects of CBD in regards to MS and you can confidently choose CBD as an alternative therapy for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
